Where do you get your clothes from?? (Night Class)

Watch this video on workers in Bangladesh.
Now that you have experienced (granted that it is limited) both sides of the outsourcing argument where do you stand?  Create a response that harnesses what you have learned about specialization and trade.  Is this just our reality or can business practices be changed to benefit everyone??  Give examples to support your arguments and reply to another person's comment.

Quick in-class post (Night Class)

What is your interpretation of this quote made by Claude Frederic Bastiat, “When goods cannot cross boundaries armies surely will?”

CLAUDE FREDERIC BASTIAT was a French economist, legislator, and writer who championed private property, free markets, and limited government.

How do you plan to specialize? (Night Class)

Please tell the class how you plan to specialize yourself within the U.S. economy.  What training will you need, where will you find this training and how much will this training cost? What services or skills will you be trading with others? Remember to comment on the post of your peers.

Making an exchange who wins? (Night Class)

Step #1 Imagine that you pull up to a gas station and put $25 worth of gas in the tank.  After you are done pumping the gas you go inside the gas station and pay the owner $25.  At this point you traded $25 for X amount of gas (depends on price per gallon).  Who gained from this situation and lost in this situation.  State your opinion and respond to at least one of your peers post!

Step #2.  Also watch this 2 minute video and guess what the highest price for gasoline will be in 2014!

Introductions (Night Class)

Your first assignment is a simple one!  Introduce yourself to the class.  If you have already made an introduction from a previous post add current updates to what is happening in your life and copy it onto this blog posting.  I'm excited to meet some new people! Here is an example of a past students post.

Hi, my name is Anonymous. I am 20 years old, about to turn 21 on March 19th. I have gone to many schools including Apple Valley High School, Lakeville South High School, Apple Valley ALC, DCALS and now, Rahncliff. I am 4 and half credits from my diploma. I should have my diploma by the end of this session and I am SO EXCITED. I’m looking forward to furthering my education. I’m planning on going to school for nursing. I hope to work as a psych nurse in a hospital, but I would also enjoy moving around and working in plenty of different areas as well. I currently work at Verizon Wireless in Shakopee and I have worked there for just under a year. I don’t hate it, but sales is DEFINITELY not where I plan on staying.

Final Post! (Night Class)

Congratulations on completing the course I had a great time working will all of you.  I just have one more question.   Did utilizing a blog in this class benefit you in anyway?  For example did doing this exercise make you closer with any of your peers, did it help you be more prepared for class or did it expose you to new information.  Please be as specific as possible, don’t be afraid to look back at old post for ideas.  If participating in this class blog did not benefit you please (which is ok I like honesty) be specific with your reasons.  Thanks again for participating in this activity I feel like it enriched our class.

Identify one abused common good in society (Night Class)

In class today we learned about the tragedy of the commons.  (Picture on your right is a man standing a mountain of buffalo bones, "I think its just skulls.") Think about the world you inhabit today, what is one commonly owned resource that is abused?  Please be specific with your answers.   Don't just say the environment is a tragedy of the commons because people pollute.  What part of the environment? Why is it abused? Why are people polluting this area? Remember it doesn't have to be something natural (animals, trees etc.)  Good luck, remember to respond to one of your peers post.

Save the Whales! (Night Class)

In society there is concern about certain animal species becoming extinct (like whales).  There are many people that have campaigned to save animals that are endangered (Save the Whales).  Think about the amount of beef and chicken consumed every day.  Why aren't cattle and chickens in danger of extinction, along with all the other endangered species?????

Think about the activity we did in class today.  What were some of the problems you and your group encountered?  Take time to ponder......................Then respond to this question!
Do you think only people with enough money should get the goods produced in an economic system?  Or should a government decide who receives the goods? Explain.

To Study or Work that is the question! (Night Class)

The percentage of teenagers using their precious time to work for wages or to look for work had dropped to the lowest on record.  Create a hypothesis for why this is.  Also, include details from your own personal life to this post.  If you have ever had a job during high school or are currently employed explain why you made this decision and if it affected your human capital.  If you have never had a job in high school explain why you made this decision and how your human capital has been affected.

Increasing your human capital (Night Class)

Human Capital: the knowledge and skills people gain from education, on-the-job training, and other experience.  Building your own human capital is an important and can lead to great success in the future.  What have you done lately to increase your human capital?  Tell the class what you have done to increase your human capital and how it will help you in the future.  Personally, I went back to school to obtain another teaching license in drivers education.  This new license will allow me to obtain a summer job when I am not teaching. Post are by the beginning of Wednesdays class 3/5/14

Who should get paid more (Night Class)

Construction worker
Male/Female model
Waiter/Waitress
Police officer

Listed above are four occupations found in our society.  Your job is to list in descending order, which occupation should be paid the most and which should be paid the least.  Don’t go looking up the salaries of these professions and try to put them in the correct order that is not what I am looking for.  This response should be based on your opinion of what occupation you feel is the most important.  After you have ranked the occupations give an explanation on how you came to your decision. Remember you must make one comment on someone else’s post to receive credit.  Post will be due on Monday March 3rd.  Here’s an example.

1.     Police
2.     Food servers (waiter/waitress)
3.     Male/Female Model
4.     Construction worker

Police keep everyone else safe and risk their own safety in the process.  Police should be compensated substantially for the risk they are taking with their lives.  If there were no police everyone else would just do what they want and life would not be fair.  I hate cooking so I need people to prepare food for me.  Food servers bring me food, which is the essence of existence!  Plus, I need to have energy in Chris’s economics class! Models are important because……………………you get the point!

Econ A (Night Class) Introductions!

Welcome to Economics! My name is Chris Riha I will be your teacher for this class.  This is my third year teaching at Rahncliff Learning Center.  When at work I am teaching ESL and High School Social Studies courses.  I received my teaching degree from the University of St. Cloud State (Go Huskies!) and am currently taking Masters courses at the University of Mankato.  When I'm not teaching I like to be active playing intramural sports like basketball and softball.  I also love to explore the outdoors.  Fishing, camping or hiking are ways I spend my time outdoors.  Traveling has always been a passion of mine also.  I have been to New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, Mexico, Thailand, Malaysia and Laos.  I was lucky enough to live in Bangkok for a year and worked at a high school teaching English.  I am excited to work with all of you and can't wait to get to know you better!

Mr. Riha's Blog for KSP 667

Assure Model

Analyze Learners:

-General Characteristics:
·      Students most students are below average readers and writers required for high school academia
·      Around 25% of the class English is a secondary language.
·      Mix of students have learning disabilities, teen parents or are not living at home with their parents
·      Students have trouble meeting deadlines

-Learning Styles:
·      Students dislike having to read for the entire class period or writing assignments by hand.
·      Students like to listen to music when given individual work time
·      Some students participate more when involved in a group assignment

State Standards and Objectives:
·      9.2.3.3.1 Identify the incentives and trade- offs related to a choice made by an individual, household, organization or government; describe the opportunity cost of a choice; and analyze the consequences of a choice (both intended and unintended).
·      TLW explain how unlimited wants and scarce resources influence decision-making.
·      TLW distinguish goods and services, factors of production, and tradeoffs visible in common places and everyday situations.
·      TLW apply an economic way of thinking to their own lives.

Select Strategies:

·      Show students Notebook guide visual 2.1 that explains fictional scenario typical Friday night for a high school student.
·      Students will pair up and decided how they will allocate their resources if it was a Friday for them
·      A class discussion will be held to help us identify what people valued and why.
·      The teacher explains that students just experienced the problem of scarcity.  Scarcity forces people to make decisions like those made during the activity.
·      Students are assigned sections 1 -2 two readings from chapter 2.  Students are responsible submitting answers about the readings via Nakiu.

Utilize Technology, Media and Materials:

·      In this the teacher will need a computer hooked up to a projector/smartboard.  Visual 2.1 will be shown to the class and introduce the lesson.  Students will have the last 20 minutes to begin their homework.  During this time students can submit answers to Naiku using a personal device, school Ipad or School laptop.

Required learner participation:

·      Students must work with a partner to discover what is most important way to spend their time on a Friday night.
·      Students must complete readings and questions via Naiku.

Evaluate and Revise:

·      The lesson was a success.  Students identified what was a most important to them on a Friday night and the opportunity cost of their decisions.  Next time I would like to share document 2.1 as a PDF through Google Docs, Dropbox or email.  Allowing students to have the laptops up and running before they are given work time will allow for a more seamless transition between activities.  Also it will save time, which allows students get more homework done in class.
