Where do you get your clothes from?? (Day Class)

Watch this video on workers in Bangladesh.

Now that you have experienced (granted that it is limited) both sides of the outsourcing argument where do you stand?  Create a response that harnesses what you have learned about specialization and trade.  Is this just our reality or can business practices be changed to benefit everyone??  Give examples to support your arguments and reply to another person's comment.

  1. I think that we should specialize and trade with other countries because we are getting what we want. With specializing we can learn one quality and have other people mow our lawn for us or dry clean our clothes, ect. That way we have more time in our day to do the things we want to do instead of always working.

    1. Exactly, we trade to make sure we aren't wasting our time!

  2. We trade with people who know what they are doing when we don't, they specialize for a reason. We can spend our time doing other things instead of wasting it.

    1. I agree because why should we waste our day doing a bunch of things when we can focus on one thing

  3. I feel that both the people are right that people shouldn't be treated the way that they are treated but also they are the ones who got the job that they got they can leave whenever they want to they dont have to work in the conditions that these companys are putting them through they can find something that they would be more safe in but with the companys they dont need to have the unsafe environment that they have with fire exits that are pad locked so both sides are right.

    1. I agree with you because it's entirely the worker's choice to decide if they want to stay working there. But, conditions still need to improve, just for the sake of human rights.

    2. I agree but they should have top end safety conditions at least cause its so crammed in those places. and a pad locked fire exit is pretty disgusting.

    3. I also agree with you that it's the worker's choice to work there but also if you look at other available jobs... what better options would a worker have? Top notch safety should be a must.

  4. I think that outsourcing is still something that we need to do because it is cheaper for the companies and more efficient. It also adds to specialization and our trade relationships with other countries. But, there needs to be policies put into place that improve the conditions for workers and increases their safety on the job. For example, we need to actually enforce the fire safety laws that are in place and every company needs to have these, just not a few companies. We can not continue to let these workers suffer for our benefit.

    1. I agree, letting these workers suffer for our benefit is horrible. It really shows a lot about our country.

  5. I believe that outsourcing is very important for out country because of cost and resources. We need specialization and trade to support our people at a better cost, which also helps our people. Also to increase our harmony with other countries. The way these companies treat their workers is impulsive. Those people shouldn't have been burned to death, the company failed to inspect the building well enough and that's on them. These workers do have the choice to leave and find something else, but there isn't always something else to find.

  6. I think that we should still outsource, because of the cost of the resources the specialization benefit..but i do think that if the pay rate is so low for them and its barely anything compared to what the pay rate is for most citizens in america then i think that american companies could stand to raise it a little more.

  7. We all know that everyone has unlimited wants and we Americans want everything for as cheap as it can come. We depend on others to make products for us because they can do it much cheaper then we can produce the products. They said that that the people were only getting paid forty dollars a month. It doesn't seem like much but the video also said that the people were being paid more then the required amount. The world is a dog eat dog world.

    1. I agree that it's a dog eat dog world. You could ask anyone from any country and they would all say they wished they got paid more. It's just not a reality. So you're right about unlimited wants but those wants are from people everywhere.

  8. The low living standard caused this situation. You can see they are living in a slum area of the city. However, the company thinks too much about the profit and doesn't care about insurance and safety at the workplace.
I don't think that the salary is unfair; this is what happens to a third world country. When they leave their homeland and come to the city for higher income, this is what happens. They always think that living and working in the city can improve their living standard but I can say it's just a DREAM. The prices in an urban area are much higher than in a rural area, everything from food, drink, house, electricity and many things. I used to live in the biggest city of my country and I know what is going on; a lot of people move to city for a job and usually not too many people are successful. I still don't know why they think they can change their living standard by moving to a big city where everything is competitive. The result is they have to live in poor conditions.

    1. Yeah, I agree. They take advantage of the countries standard of living.

    2. How can we take advantage of a countries standard of living when it is their government that has set the standard? Strongly disagree.

  9. I think the wages are up to the factory's but they should have top end safety conditions they have the funds to do that they just choose not to. I think its pretty messed up that fire exits are padlocked, they should spend money on improving conditions and they should consider raising there wages.

    1. I agree I think that they should concentrate more on safety of their workers.

    2. I said the same thing its like they want the people to burn alive

  10. i still believe that people use "specialization" to take advantage of others. Though it can be necessary to use other peoples skills to benefit us and them, i feel that it is immoral if it is only benefiting us. And i feel that this is our reality. we can change, but we won't. people are naturally greedy. they are going to take advantage of other people to make their life easier and get more out of less.

    1. I agree with that statement because while they are living large with no stress of wondering how they are making it day to day living in shacks, We are living in the biggest homes enjoying what they they would dream of. I think it's very cruel and unfair.

  11. I think that they should continue to do this, but they definitely need to think about the conditions in which these workers work in. In other countries $40 a week is something they wouldn't be able to make working anywhere else. Yes, I believe they are taking advantage, but they are taking advantage of their lower standard of living. They are used to this lower standard of living and basically getting ripped off, but they don't know anything different. Some may even think its a great job and are thankful for these jobs. My aunts in Mexico work in factories and work long hours and take about $100 a week, but they tell me they are very thankful to have these jobs. They said they would be making less working anywhere else.

    1. i understand your argument, but think about it. just because someone has a lower standard of living doesn't mean another person has any right to take advantage of them. who cares if they're making more than what they would've other wise, it doesn't matter in the end when they still can't afford to eat or pay for shelter. these companies are making enough money to pay these people more, they are just trying to keep as much money as possible, thinking only about themselves.

    2. Its not right, I agree that its completely wrong. Here you can fight these things, strikes, unions, but in these countries you start complaining there is another person willing and waiting to take your position. Companies are greedy, we live in a world where we take, and take and that's how it is. They want to make more money at the expensive of other less fortunate people. And to be honest even though my aunts make little money, they are grateful and have most their necessities. I get upset to think that they work extremely hard and make so little, but for them its something they are used to. I don't ever think this will change, I can't even think of ways that it could change. Its sad.

    3. that's the problem. people just seem to think that if they stick their head in the sand and not worry about it, than it won't be a problem. but the issue will still be there, things can't and won't change unless people take the initiative to make a change. just think about the fact that what ever company your aunt is working for HAS the money to pay her more. she could be living a more suitable life. but b/c a vast majority of the people just stick their head in the sand things will never change. that is the problem.

  12. I believe their should be a pay raise because they are mistreated and work so hard in the worst conditions possible. I don't think its far to let them work so hard not to be able to have the proper care of living or working expenses while we wear our name brand clothes, and they are getting richer.

  13. I think that trade is important and it makes it easier for us to specialize in something else when another country is already making the good that we need. I also think that the factories in the other countries should be safe for all the workers and the wages should be enough to support their families. There is no reason the fire escapes should be padlocked.

  14. I feel like we need to treat the people we trade with better because they're doing us a big favor by producing things we don't have time for anymore. I think specialization is good for both because it creates jobs for people in other countries and it helps us with things we don't have time to always make.

  15. I think It would help a little bit if they also interviewed people who work for local companies and could compare. I feel that their pay should increase some. Nothing dramatic though. I definitely feel that fire hazards and safety codes need to be set in order though. That's the most important part.

  16. I think outsourcing is important and necessary especially when it comes to countries that have the comparitive advantage. It saves us time and money and also benefits them. Yes the safety standards are not the best in some countries but I don't see it as a U.S. problem. That isn't something we need to interfere with. After the Civil War the U.S. had very similar situations. Poor conditions in the factories causing injuries and deaths. They were working in unsanitary and sometimes toxic places. Now come 2014 the U.S. doesn't have that anymore. I think it's just a point in time where that country is at that will be fixed in the future through time. And if they stopped making those goods the conditions would not improve. There should be more standards to safety but it happens. The outsourcing still needs to take place to fill those orders. I don't think the majority of countries really don't care what goes on just as long as they get their goods. And then that country gets their money in return.

  17. I believe that these wages are okay because of the standard of living in these countries but I also believe the working conditions need to be better for fair employee treatment. Specializing as a whole nation boosts our economy to create a better product more efficiently and ultimately because it motivates our country to trade a bunch. I think that by specializing, that makes sure that everyone benefits because specializing creates a greater variety of products.
