Identify one abused common good in society (Night Class)
In class today we learned about the tragedy of the commons. (Picture on your right is a man standing a mountain of buffalo bones, "I think its just skulls.") Think about the world you inhabit today, what is one commonly owned resource that is abused? Please be specific with your answers. Don't just say the environment is a tragedy of the commons because people pollute. What part of the environment? Why is it abused? Why are people polluting this area? Remember it doesn't have to be something natural (animals, trees etc.) Good luck, remember to respond to one of your peers post.

One common good that is abused is our road. People think hey own the road. They commonly do so by throwing their ciggerate butts out the window, thinking oh its just one ciggerate butt, what harm will it do to the earth. Well say there are 50 people that smoke and drive on the roads, 2 times a day, thats already 100 ciggerate butts on the ground. The littering off the ciggeratte butts add up and cause harm to our earth. i'm pretty sure eventually we will be driving on ciggeratte butts instead off the road.
ReplyDeletei agree with you that the road is abused by many. a lot of the time i see people just throwing trash out their windows on the highway.
DeleteI agree that many people are abusing this by throwing their cigarette butts on the ground. But some companies have begun to make biodegradable butts with seeds in the filters.
DeleteI think so too. People throw their garbage right out the window and it's harming the environment.
Deleteone common good that is abused is out city parks. every time i take the kids that i nanny to the park never the less is there trash everywhere. there would be things such as diapers on the ground.. used ones and empty water bottles and food wrappers. 10f ft away from all of this trash is a trash can too. not to metion how dirty of an enviorment that is for our children to be playing in. sooner or later they will be playing in trash.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all the grafetti everywhere and garbage.
DeleteIn today's American society we are abusing gasoline. It is one of the very few non-renewable resources that we constantly use. We consciously over use this resource even though we know the fact that it is causing great harm to both the world and to our countries foreign relations as well. It causes harm to the world for the fact that all the fumes coming from the gasoline when used is causing our atmosphere to heat up which causes our climate to change drastically. Secondly, it causes us to constantly go to war with other countries to keep replenishing our constant need for that resource. Thus, with these facts, I believe that gasoline is one major non-renewable resource that America constantly over abuses on a daily basis.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, people could easily carpool or take the bus to reduce fuel use, but yet not a lot of people do that,
DeleteIt definitely is abused. There are so many options out there but this one is the easiest to come by, and people take advantage of it thinking that it will always be around for the rest of their lives
DeleteI was going to say this!!! I think gas is probably the most important resource right now that we are taking for granted. We need to find an alternative fast
DeleteI believe that in america parking lots are abused. People will drive too fast in parking lots thinking that no other cars are going to drive right in front of them. Also people will throw their gum on the ground and seem to not care at all. I'm always walking through parking lots seeing all the gum squished to the ground. Also i see people dumping their coffee or soda onto the ground in parking lots to get rid of it thinking that it will not harm the environment. Basically people don't seem to care, and think they can do what they want where they want.
ReplyDeleteI think the roads are abused too much. People throw garbage out their windows all the time thinking it won't harm anything. They don't think it has any consequence. The roads are getting trashed and destroyed and it can hurt the environment. We should be trying to stop this somehow and educate citizens of the dangers. It's unhealthy for us and our environment and it needs to be stopped.
ReplyDeleteLittering is definitely a universal thing. It's not just the roads too.
DeleteTo me a commonly abused place would be our schools, people dont seem to care for the things they use like tables, chairs, or anythign in the school. We should stop destroying peolpes stuff that isnt are.
ReplyDeleteA universally abused common good are the rainforests. Wood is a valuable resource, but excessive logging, especially in parts where it's unregulated, deforestation can occur. This not only depletes resources, but destroys the habitat of animals who call those rainforests home. Since there is a food chain, what is detrimental to one specie, is detrimental to others if not all.
ReplyDeleteWater is easily one of the most abused resources. It is polluted and disgusting. There are places, in this country and others, where the water is toxic and undrinkable. There are problems with water that did not exist a hundred years ago. People dump all their trash and their chemical crap into the water and expect it not to affect us. Water is hugely taken for granted. People forget that it needs to be taken care of too. Water is the most essential thing to our lives, and it isn't even safe for us to drink anymore because it has thousands of chemicals and minerals in concentrated, dangerous amounts. If there are animals getting poisoned and dying from drinking water, than why do we think that it's perfectly safe for us to drink and shower in? Water isn't even water anymore. A lot of the damage done to it is irreversible and people don't realize that.
ReplyDeleteI 100% agree. People seem to take for granted the things that they need most in life!
DeleteAir is a common good that is abused. I think air is often times overlooked, but air is vital in our everyday lives (obviously) yet we tend to not take care of it. We pollute our air everyday by driving cars, producing goods through factories, etc. In Minnesota we have fairly clean air because we are surrounded by lush vegetation, but in big cities, like Houston TX, you can tell the air is polluted because of smog. We do not seem to care that we are polluting the one thing in life that we need most to survive. Even though yes we still have air, it is not healthy for us to be breathing in polluted air.
ReplyDeleteOne commonly abused resource is our lakes and rivers. Pollution to our waterways is very common, and it's ruining our water supply. By dumping chemicals and other sorts of bad things into them, its making them unswimmable, unfishable, and ultimately unusable. Another way people take advantage of the lakes in transporting invasive species from lake to lake. It's so easy to check your boat and trailer before launching, and most of us do. But the selfish people who don't, put invasive species that ruin lakes ecosystems and completely change the lake.
