In society there is concern about certain animal species becoming extinct (like whales). There are many people that have campaigned to save animals that are endangered (Save the Whales). Think about the amount of beef and chicken consumed every day. Why aren't cattle and chickens in danger of extinction, along with all the other endangered species?????
I think we have quite the surplus of cows and chickens and have found ways to breed them more that we don't need to worry about them. Also, scientists are working on growing such meats in labs. Now whales, we don't have a surplus, they and other endangered animals are scarce because as a society we don't see a huge need for them but we yearn to protect them because we know that we don't have a lot and we want to preserve them for future generations.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. We have found ways to process chickens and cattle and help breed them faster. We eat them so they are a necessity, so we do what we can to make sure they stay around.
Deleteexactly right! We don't need to worry about tbem. When I think of why people tally to save endangered species, I think of Noah and the ark. If any animal is killed of the one male or female, a specific piece of Creation is lost forever. People love animals too much to knowingly let that happen. There will always be a small group who cares for a specific animal
DeleteI think that as an economy that eats a lot of Chicken and Cattle we have found ways to mass produce these animals. With Industrial Agriculture these animals are bred very quickly and even injected with growth hormones to help them grow faster. So as an economy that thrives on these animals as food, we have founds ways to keep the supply going to feed everyone. In the world (especially the U.S.) We have grown to become very narcissistic , Everything is about us and the world revolves around us. In the process of thinking and acting in this manner, we tend to harm the Earth, putting these animals like whales in danger. We don't THINK about it. Some people don't even care, so this is why endangered animals are worried about and why there are groups of people willing to "Save the Whales" and so on. Nobody thinks about them on a regular basis.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree. We do mass produce our livestock. We also definitely don't give enough thought to what we're doing to our planet.
DeleteWe have more chicken and beef because of GMOs, growth hormones and industrial growing. These things make cattle and chicken not extinct. Whales and other species are going extinct because we don't produce them ourselves. They are also more sacred to people than something we have grown so accustomed to consuming. Cows and chicken naturally reproduce more than whales do which makes them more common. People make money off of animals like cows and chickens so they need a lot of them. A majority of Americans see whales as an animal where chicken and cows are food.
ReplyDeleteYou know a lot about modern agriculture. I agree that the main reason behind the demand for these animals is the amount of money to be made.
DeleteI agree. Most people don't care but a lot don't even care enough to notice there is a problem. There is so many problems with the way we produce our food that a lot of people aren't even aware of.
ReplyDeleteWe have no control over endangered species, like we have over cattle and chickens. So, people feel the need to protect whales and other animals, because they are running a risk of going extinct. They have domesticated cattle, chicken for the purpose of having food. So, they have found ways to make them grow faster and cheaper ways to feed them. For example they feed cattle corn because its cheaper. They are in high demand, so they need to find ways to meet those demands.
ReplyDeleteChicken or cows are raised in order to feed human. They have a high population and high birth rate. They are not scared because we can control the amount of them and their behavior.
ReplyDeleteWhales is a wild species with low birth rate. It's wrong to treat whales like poultry. They are scared and belong to wild, the population of whales becomes smaller due to hunting.
It's easy to have 20 baby chicken in two month but it's impossible to have 20 baby whales in the same amount of time.
Couldn't agree with you more. whales have a way lower birth rate. Wow that's a lot of baby chicks.
DeleteI agree with how chickens and cows can reproduced faster than the whales another wild animals
DeleteThe United States has farms and ranches that do nothing but raise livestock. We were luckily got the best land in the world for farming and agriculture. we are taking full advantage of that.(Like the Fertile Crescent) As for why I think that some animals are put on the endangered species list, some animals might only mate once in a life time. and some people are just plain GREEDY, they take and take and take just so that they can make a profit in the. No human in the world needs the ivory from a living elephant. and no one needs whatever a whale would give them. Honestly I cant think of one reason that anyone would ever need anything from a whale. SO SPOT IT.
ReplyDeleteThe reason these species aren't in danger of extinction is because of the amount of effort put into keeping these species abundant. The demand for these animals is high, whereas the demand for those endangered is generally much lower. Because of the lack of these animals in the wild, we are unable to have the same amount of demand.
ReplyDeleteit's easier for cows chickens and other animals like that to survive in more places Wales polar bears penguins and other animals like that their homes or being destroyed because of us And nature.
ReplyDeleteThat's true i agree. And especially the animals that live in cold climates they are really being affected right now because it's starting to get warmer in there climate.
Deletei think it's because they know the cattle and chicken and cattle are in high demand so we put more effort into breeding ,keeping them safe, and healthy for production. as for the extinct animals, there isn't nearly as much profit in wild life so they don't put in as much effort to keep them safe.
ReplyDeleteExactly right! There is a reason why we don't kill and eat whales. It's inconvenient to hunt them sure, but also, there aren't as much of them. How would we create a system or business out of sustaining hunger needs with whale meat? With chicken and cattle, we humans know how to raise them by the millions and know how to slaughter them and sell them... they both taste good too. Businesses can thrive just off of chicken or cattle production because their product is needed.
ReplyDeleteI think that the reason we don't try to save the animals that we kill thousands a day is because we breed them in order to kill them for food. I also dont think that these animals will ever become extinct because there is more bred then killed.
