Increasing your human capital (Night Class)

Human Capital: the knowledge and skills people gain from education, on-the-job training, and other experience.  Building your own human capital is an important and can lead to great success in the future.  What have you done lately to increase your human capital?  Tell the class what you have done to increase your human capital and how it will help you in the future.  Personally, I went back to school to obtain another teaching license in drivers education.  This new license will allow me to obtain a summer job when I am not teaching. Post are by the beginning of Wednesdays class 3/5/14

  1. I would say that attending high school or any sort of school my whole life up to this point has greatly increased my human capital. Attending ABE is helping, too, but it's going to help me more in the long run because it's helping me graduate high school. If I graduate, I can get into college and college provides a lot of knowledge and skills. I hope anyways, because it's super expensive. Also working throughout the past couple years has been a good way to increase my human capital, because it teaches me about real world problems and how to handle situations.

    1. I agree. High school education is really all we have on our resumes. For some, we might have previous jobs too.

  3. As teenagers, we haven't experienced nearly as much as our parents in the real world. We've had years of schooling and some of us may have had jobs or currently do have jobs. I would say my human capital consists of over a decade of schooling and a few years of working a job. Other than that, I'm pretty inexperienced. I don't have a high school diploma or college degree. All I have is a GPA and a few years of sales experience from Best Buy.

    1. You might not have as much experience, but you can always still learn. Keep an open mind. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, and your future will be bright.

  4. Don't discount these experiences, having a job and finishing school can be valued by many.

  5. I would say that my human capitol consists of all of my years of schooling any job position that I have held and any sport that I have done. I feel like ABE is helping my human capitol the most right now because it is helping me reach the same goal that all seniors in high school are striving for, and that is to graduate.

    1. I agree with what you said. It's the only reason any of us are here right now is to graduate.

  6. Like everyone else has said, schooling is the main human capital for me, but also parents because parents started teaching you manners and learn how to read and do things before teachers did (no offense teachers). Work is also a major one because ever job is different, there fore you can learn different skills from different jobs.

    1. I definitely agree with what you said about parents, how that are probably the first people in your life to contribute to your human capital.

    2. I never even thought about how our parents help our human capital. I think they help it a lot throughout our whole lives not necessarily only when we're little, but they are our main way of increasing it when we are young.

  8. I definitely agree with what everyone is saying with education being the main contributor to human capital. After all, most people spend at least 12 years in school. I certainly challenge myself to actually learn and take difficult classes. Also of equal importance is the chance to socialize in school. I think social skills can serve you better than some knowledge gained from a book. Also a contributor to my human capital is volunteer work. I've volunteered with the church and the Red Cross among others. Being part of something bigger than myself is an important experience. Come to think of it, I think you can argue anything you do contributes to human capital because everything you do is experience.

  9. I believe that my 12 years of schooling has been my main contributor to my human capital. I also believe that my two jobs have contributed to my human capital. Then the last thing for me would be my nanny job three summers in a row. I had to communicate with people in all three of these situations and i feel like is a big contributor to my human capital. I feel like what you do in your everyday life can contribute to your human capital.

    2. Schooling definitely is a huge part of it, but the fact that you've worked in other various fields is a great way to make yourself more well-rounded and therefore appealing to employers later in life, and being able to communicate in different situations is key to anything you do in the future.

  11. I believe that schooling is the best way to increase you human capital. But parents can also increase your human capital. Without schooling you would only know how to do what your parents know how to do.

  12. The biggest thing that I'm doing to increase my human capital is completing my high school education to move on to college. In my life, I have done other things to increase it, like learning at least the basics of different languages to open up more career opportunities and learning different business and speaking skills. I also have tried to get involved with different groups, events, and volunteer activities to learn as much as I possibly can about the world and try to make a difference.

    1. I like your point about language, I did not think of that! But, yes language is a huge part in increasing your human capital. Knowing more than one language gives you a major advantage in life personally for things like travel as well as in resume building!

  13. I would have to agree with the majority of the class when they say that school has gained their human capital. For me i would have to say the same, that school and my work experience has increased my human capital. Ive managed several restaurants over the past ten years and have learned so much on the job. Going back to school and earning my diploma will increase my human capital and further my employment opportunties.

  14. I believe that everyday we are increasing our human capital without even realizing it. Each day we have new experiences that change our mindsets and equip us in being better humans in the future. Personally, SES has provided me with endless amounts of opportunity to increase my human capital. Each day we are doing new hands on things. Last fall, we got to do a pond study of a pond in Eagan. We had to identify organisms and vegetation as well as chemicals contained in and around the pond. We then proceeded to write a scientific report on our finding and then we presented the information obtained to officials of the City of Eagan. Or, I spend the last 10 days of February on and island off of Honduras doing a dive study and marine conservation, talk about experience! Besides school, my job provides me with an ability to increase my human capital. I am Personal Care Assistant for a quadriplegic. I help to care for her personally as well as complete the jobs she cannot like cleaning, organizing, and shopping. It has not only given me a different perspective on life, but has provided me with wonderful job experience that will benefit me later in life.

    1. You have some really interesting examples. It seems like those examples are specialized which would really be beneficial if you want to go into those fields.

  15. I am increasing my human capital by going back to school to pursue my high school diploma. It will help me in the future by being able to get more jobs and more pay. It will provide stability, and a brighter future.

  16. I believe that by simply living my life I am increasing my human capital. By simply experiencing life. I am gaining knowledge through experience and not just books or having a teacher cram it down my throat. For example I learn people skills at work by dealing with people all the time. Dealing with all their problems and what not. By experiencing this, I learn much faster and much more so it will help more later.

    1. Its very true life expierences are a great way to increase human capital. There are many things in life that school nor books can teach us about the way the world works.
